High-altitude training camps and IV drip: the complete guide for coaches

Evidence-based IV therapy recommendations for coaches managing athletes at altitude training camps
22 декабря 2025 г. от

High-altitude training camps have been a cornerstone of elite athletic preparation for decades. Training at altitudes of 2000 to 3500 meters stimulates erythropoietin production, increases red blood cell mass and improves oxygen delivery to working muscles. However, the physiological demands of altitude adaptation also create specific nutritional challenges that coaches and medical staff must address proactively.

Iron is the most critical nutrient for altitude training success. Erythropoiesis stimulated by hypoxia requires a substantial increase in iron supply for hemoglobin synthesis. Athletes arriving at altitude with suboptimal iron stores will have blunted erythropoietic responses and may actually experience performance decrements rather than improvements. Pre-camp iron IV loading in athletes with ferritin below 40 micrograms per liter is strongly recommended.

B12 and folate support red blood cell maturation alongside iron. Antioxidants including vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione protect the expanded red blood cell population from oxidative hemolysis that occurs at altitude. Magnesium and potassium support cardiovascular adaptation and prevent the arrhythmias that occasionally complicate altitude acclimatization.

Our Milan and Cortina clinics offer camp support packages for national and club teams, including pre-camp blood testing panels, individualized IV protocols for each athlete, daily monitoring support and post-camp recovery infusions to consolidate the hematological gains achieved during altitude exposure.
