Zinc and selenium IV for immune resilience in winter sport competitors

How targeted micromineral IV therapy protects immune function in high-performance winter athletes
21 January 2026 by

The immune system of a competitive winter sport athlete faces extraordinary demands. Cold exposure, altitude hypoxia, intense physical exertion, travel-related pathogen exposure and psychological stress of competition all simultaneously challenge immune homeostasis. Zinc and selenium are the two micronutrients most directly implicated in maintaining immune resilience under these conditions.

Zinc is required for the development and function of virtually every immune cell type. Neutrophils, natural killer cells, T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes all depend on adequate zinc for activation, proliferation and effector function. Zinc also directly inhibits rhinovirus replication in vitro, providing a mechanistic basis for the well-documented association between zinc status and upper respiratory infection duration.

Selenium is incorporated into selenoproteins including glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, which protect immune cells from oxidative damage during inflammatory responses. Selenium deficiency impairs the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells and reduces antibody production following vaccination, with clear implications for athlete health during demanding competitive seasons.

Intravenous zinc and selenium delivery achieves tissue concentrations that cannot be matched by oral supplementation, particularly in athletes with compromised gut function during heavy training. Our immune resilience protocol at the Milan and Cortina clinics combines zinc (15-20mg IV), selenium (100-200mcg IV) with vitamin C, vitamin D and a B-complex, providing comprehensive micronutrient support for immune system optimization.
